The Defense Department has identified the fourth USA soldier killed in Niger (nee-ZHEHR') when a joint patrol of American and Niger forces was ambushed by militants believed linked to the Islamic State group.

Johnson was among about a dozen USA soldiers conducting a joint patrol with about 40 Nigerien soldiers on Wednesday, when they came under attack. He was assigned to 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Fort Bragg. Bryan C. Black, Jeremiah W. Johnson and Dustin M. Wright.

They were among a squad of 10 to 12 USA soldiers on a joint patrol with Nigerien soldiers who came under attack by a force of 50 enemy fighters.

Staff Sgt. Bryan Black of Puyallup, Washington, who enlisted in the Army in October 2009, was a Green Beret serving as a Special Forces medical sergeant.

The four slain soldiers are the first USA combat fatalities in Niger, where about 800 US troops are deployed, mainly to support local forces combatting extremist groups such as Boko Haram and al-Qaida in the Maghreb, which operate in the region. Others are involved in a training-and-advising mission with Niger's military to improve its counterterrorism capabilities.
