'Production Hell' on Model 3 Delays Debut of Tesla Semi

'Production Hell' on Model 3 Delays Debut of Tesla Semi”

Tesla said Friday it was delaying the planned launch of its electric transport truck, diverting resources to step up production of its Model 3 sedan and to produce batteries for storm-ravaged Puerto Rico.

Tesla had originally planned to debut the semi truck on October 26, following what Musk described as overwhelmingly positive feedback from trucking companies.

"Tesla Semi unveil now Nov 16", Musk tweeted on Friday.

Like Musk said on Twitter yesterday, Tesla reiterated that the delay is to "focus on Model 3 production and increasing deliveries of battery packs to Puerto Rico", but the company also added that "the first Tesla Truck prototype is completed" - likely to emphasize that the delay is not due to the truck program.

After Tweeting back and forth about the possibility of powering Puerto Rico by using solar energy and Powerwalls, the Governor of Puerto Rico, Ricardo Rossello indicated on late Friday evening that he has had a "great initial conversation" with the Tesla boss and have begun the process of seeking out solutions to territory's exhausted and tortured power system.

In addition to offering to Musk has indicated his priority of ramping up battery production for Puerto Rico, presumably to use for its Powerwall appliances that have been relentlessly shipping to the island. Do you want to show the world the power and scalability of your (Tesla technologies)? "(Puerto Rico) could be that flagship project".

In response to a request for help from Rossello on Thursday, Musk said in a tweet "I would be happy to talk".

The Model 3 could help Tesla approach its goal of becoming more of a mass market producer.

The FCC said that 83 percent of cell sites remain out of service in Puerto Rico, while wireless communications companies are deploying temporary sites.

Separately, the US Federal Communications Commission late on Friday said that it had approved Alphabet Inc's application to provide emergency cellular service to Puerto Rico through balloons.
