Ballon d'Or: Kane, De Gea, Kante, Coutinho, De Bruyne, Neymar shortlisted”

Ballon d'Or holder Cristiano Ronaldo, the hot favourite to retain his crown in 2017, has been included in the final group of nominations for the award.

Ronaldo has been nominated once again, as has Barcelona and Argentina star Lionel Messi.

Kane has enjoyed a superb year, scoring 43 times in 37 appearances for club and country, to help Spurs qualify for the Champions League and England next year's World Cup.

Messi has claimed the prize on five occasions, while no player other than the Argentine or his Portuguese rival has won since Brazil midfielder Kaka in 2007. The Ballon d'Or victor will be announced in December.

Manchester City playmaker Kevin De Bruyne, Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea and Roma forward Edin Dzeko make up the rest of the group to be announced in France Football's third quintet.

Kante was at the heart of Antonio Conte's side which stormed to the 2016/17 Premier League title and the France worldwide won the PFA Player of the Year for his efforts last season.

Ronaldo beat Messi to win the global award for the best footballer for a fourth time in 2016 and will compete with the likes of Luis Suarez, Gianluigi Buffon, Antoine Griezmann and Robert Lewandowski.
