Bauer Media appeals Rebel Wilson judgement

Bauer Media appeals Rebel Wilson judgement”

Bauer Media will appeal the quantum of damages in the recent defamation judgement involving actress Rebel Wilson.

Wilson successfully sued the publisher over eight articles printed in 2015 that were found by a Melbourne Supreme Court to have damaged her reputation and marketability in "a huge worldwide marketplace".

Justice Dixon said Bauer Media failed to properly investigate the allegations made against Wilson, and published them in Women's Day, knowing them to be false.

The Hollywood star was awarded the highest defamation payout in Australia's history after the publishers of Woman's Day magazine published articles depicting her as a liar.

Bauer Media General Counsel Adrian Goss it was important for the company to "revisit this unprecedented decision on the quantum of damages", especially because it "also has broad implications for the media industry".

"The damage suffered by Miss Wilson warrants a substantial damages award to vindicate her and nail the lie", he said.

The jury ruled in Wilson's favour in June, agreeing the articles unfairly painted her as a serial liar who had faked her way to a Hollywood career.

Wilson's lawyer Richard Leder previously said the win set a "significant record" and was about four times the previous highest amount awarded in an Australian defamation case.

Wilson pledged to donate every cent to charity and the Aussie film industry after her trial.

The payout was split into $650,000 in general damages and $3,917,472 in special damages after the Pitch Perfect star lost the opportunity to be cast in movies following publication of the malicious articles.

The court was told Wilson had offered to settle the matter for $200,000.
