Bengaluru airport to be the first Aadhaar-enabled airport in the country

Bengaluru airport to be the first Aadhaar-enabled airport in the country”

BIAL has set a deadline of 325 days to roll out the new Aadhaar system.

The Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) in Bengaluru is set to become India's first completely Aadhaar-enabled airport, boasting of a biometric boarding system.

In its statement, BIAL (Bangalore International Airport Limited) stated that the aadhaar based system will allow the airport to become a smart, intuitive and seamlessly connected.

According to reports, the process enables a passenger to be verified in less than five seconds at every checkpoint right up to the boarding gate. In next three months, domestic airlines will be brought on board while worldwide flyers can experience the entire process from October 2018.

If Aadhaar-enabled entry and biometric e-boarding are put to effect, the time dedicated to passenger verification will be nearly halved, thus leading to lesser screening time and more number of passengers entering through one gate.

BIAL has set December 2018 as the deadline to make the airport fully Aadhar enabled. Also, in the next phase, the airlines will be asked to get into the process and BIAL expects the complete implementation of the project by end of 2018.

According to a spokesperson for BIAL, the real-time authentication of passengers will improve security, speed up clearance and reduce delays at the airport.

By December 2018, passengers can have a hassle-free access across all checkpoints.

If implemented, passengers would need to give biometrics at each stage of airport process to eliminate the current practise of stamping "security checked" on physical boarding cards.

Hari Marar, Executive Director & President, BIAL said that the new process will provide seamless security and faster access to the terminal and it will also decrease the efforts needed for the validation process.

Through this process authorities will be able to develop passenger profile if needed in the future for efficiency improvisation objective. The Aadhaar-enabled system will help more passengers enter through the same gate and passengers will no longer have to show a paper ticket or boarding pass and ID at multiple checkpoints.

"We will soon know the indicative cost of the project and time frame in which it can be implemented", Aviation Secretary RN Choubey had said, adding that this will cut down the waiting time for passengers.
