Mattis Tells Military to 'Be Ready' Regarding North Korea”

US Defense Secretary James Mattis said the military should be ready to provide all options to the White House for dealing with North Korea. Following the comments Pres. Trump and the White House would not elaborate on what he meant by those comments.

Mattis said the government is now using a "diplomatically led, economic sanction-buttressed effort" to try to deter North Korea from its nuclear ambitions but said the future is unpredictable.

Sec. Mattis says it's unclear what the future may hold but we have to be ready with military options that "our president can employ if needed". The president subsequently suggested to reporters that "maybe it's the calm before the storm", sparking widespread speculation that the cryptic reference was to Korea war plans. Mattis noted the capabilities of businesses he saw there and recommended "open communication with US industry". "We currently, we currently are in a diplomatically-led effort and how many times you've seen the U.N. Security Council vote unanimously, now twice in a row, to impose stronger sanctions on North Korea". -North Korean tensions hit a new high following President Trump's United Nations address in September.

The defense secretary also offered words of security for US allies, specifically North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. During the address, Trump said that the USA will "totally destroy" North Korea if necessary and tweeted that leader Kim Jong Un "won't be around much longer". "So if you're ready, that's your duty at this point in time".
