NNPC Contracts: Buhari will not Disappoint Nigerians, Says VON DG”

President Muhammadu Buhari's meeting with petroleum minister Ike Kachikwu over an alarm over $25 billion contracts attracted front pages of Nigerian newspapers on Saturday.Guardian's headline explained that Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, declined comments after emerging from a closed-door meeting with President Buhari, over complaints of $25 billion contracts.

He added, "We are probing them because we want to get to the root of this matter".

The media was agog last week following a leaked letter written by Kachikwu to the president, complaining about Baru's excesses including alleged award of contracts worth over $25 billion without due process and approval of the NNPC Board which he (Kachikwu) heads. "The Presidency is being painstaking because it felt scandalized by the leakage of the Minister's memo and some distorted facts in it".

He said the officials who created the wide gulf between Kachikwu and the President should be punished.

The president said urgent measures should be put in place to speedily decongest the prisons, stressing the need for a new approach to prison congestion.

President Buhari meets with Supreme Court justices.

In order to conduct a thorough investigation into the grave allegations of the reckless contravention of the provisions of the Public Procurement Act, Mr. Baru should be placed on indefinite suspension while the Presidency should refer the case to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Vanguard said Dr. Kachikwu, met with President Buhari in a closed door session at the Presidential Villa, Abuja over the minister's alarm of impropriety in the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). The outcome of the meeting is yet to be disclosed.

$25 billion is nearly enough to fund the budget deficit the Finance Minister has been crying is unavailable.
