Russian billionaire insists Trump Tower meeting not about Clinton

It did not mention both that Trump Jr. had been promised damaging information on Clinton in exchange for taking the meeting, and that Akhmetshin had attended, too. The attorney was engaged in efforts at the time to repeal the law.

But it is not clear whether that was the only email exchanged between Veselnitsksya and Goldstone, who told Donald Trump Jr.in an email on June 3 that "the Crown prosecutor of Russian Federation ... offered to provide the Trump campaign with some official documents and information that would incriminate Hillary and her dealings with Russian Federation and would be very useful to your father".

Balber, the lawyer who provided the email, suggested to CNN that Goldstone "probably exaggerated and maybe willfully contorted the facts for the goal of making the meeting interesting to the Trump people". Veselnitskaya told Aras Agalarov that she had in October 2015 provided information meant to undermine the USA law to Yuri Chaika, the Russian prosecutor general, Balber said.

Balber also suggested that Goldstone "probably exaggerated and maybe willfully contorted the facts for the objective of making the meeting interesting to the Trump people".

"The documents and what she told me are consistent with my client's understanding of the goal of the meeting which was from the beginning and at all times thereafter about her efforts to launch a legislative review of the Magnitsky Act", Balber said.

The emails between Goldstone and Trump Jr. tell a different story.

The new email does not provide any conclusive evidence about why Trump Jr. accepted the meeting.

Recall that one of Trump Jr.'s early versions of what happened in that meeting was that Veselnitskaya started yammering on about a popular Russian adoption program that had been halted by Vladimir Putin in retaliation for the sanctions the USA imposed with 2012's Magnitsky Act.

Balber said Veselnitskaya also provided him a detailed account of how she secured the meeting.

That statement, released on July 8, 2017, turned out to be misleading.

"To the extent they had information concerning the fitness, character or qualifications of a presidential candidate, I believed that I should at least hear them out", Trump Jr. said in a statement to the Senate Judiciary Committee.

"Asking Donald Trump Jr. and the rest to withdraw the Magnitsky Act if Trump were elected was such a significant request that they would have come with various things to offer, and they would have thought carefully about what", Browder said earlier this year.

The president's son initially claimed the Russian attorney only discussed an adoption ban, which was imposed by Russian president Vladimir Putin in response to the sanctions.

The newly released emails also reveal a discrepancy between Veselnitskaya's and Akhmetshin's version of events.

In the emails, Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya wrote to promoter Rob Goldstone about including in the meeting an associate, Rinat Akhmetshin, who had been lobbying Congress about, as the attorney said, "these issues" and who "has invaluable knowledge about the positions held by the members of the Foreign Relations Committee that will be important to our discussion".

It's not clear why they had signed the agreement. The campaign never followed up with Veselnitskaya after the meeting, the White House said.

The source said it was odd that a non-disclosure agreement would have been necessary for the meeting. The documents, he said, are "consistent with what my clients have said". He also represents Ike Kaveladze, a USA -based employee of the Agalarovs.

Veselnitskaya did not answer CNN questions about why the forms were signed.

Someone is lying. We just don't yet know who. U.S. lawmakers passed the Magnitsky Act in 2012 to punish the Russians allegedly responsible for his death. Akhmetshin has been accused of having links to Russian intelligence.
