There are Some Changes Coming to the Driving Test from 4th December”

Instead test conductors will be allowed to ask prospective drivers to reverse out of a parking space, and quiz them about various vehicle functions mid-drive - including turning on the windscreen wipers and using a sat nav.

Drivers will have 20 minutes of independent driving time (they now have 10 minutes).

Driving tests are about to undergo the biggest change for generations in a bid to encourage motorists to be safer and more independent on the roads.

One in 5 driving tests won't use a sat nav and you'll need to follow traffic signs instead.

If you've ever dreaded the reverse around the corner manoeuvre then you're in luck - it will be scrapped under the new test.

Reversing around a corner is out, but will be replaced with one of three manoeuvres including parking in a bay or parallel parking.

This could be showing how to wash the windscreen using the auto controls and wipers.

Nope. You'll still need to pass your test if you make no more than 15 driving faults and no serious or unsafe faults.

The examiner will still mark the test in the same way, and the same things will still count as faults. But the length of time the test takes won't be changing and neither will the price.

The practical driving test is getting updated, with two manoeuvers that have foiled many potential drivers over the years being scrapped.

The DVSA said the changes are being introduced to reduce the number of people being killed in collisions.

"Making sure the driving test better assesses a driver's ability to drive safely and independently is part of our strategy to help you stay safe on Britain's roads".

The Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) have made subtle changes to the test in the past but this big overhaul is in a response to how the way we drive has changed. Meanwhile everyone who takes it after this date will say there's no way those who passed previously would have managed it the "new" way.

Our roads are among the safest in the world.

The alterations have been tested with more than 4,500 learner drivers and 850 instructors in 32 locations across Britain and are hoped to better reflect real world driving.

Not everything's changing though, prospective drivers can expect the test to still last around 40 minutes and the pass mark will remain the same - no more than 15 minor driving faults and no serious or unsafe faults will get you a licence.
