Trump administration releases hard-line immigration principles, threatening deal on 'dreamers'”

President Trump is seeking more funds from Congress to finance building a border wall along the U.S. -Mexico border as well as more resources to hire thousands of more immigration officers, according to a document obtained by The Hill.

The demand is included in a list of legislative priorities for tougher immigration enforcement that Trump and his advisers were set to release on Sunday as they seek to establish their bargaining position in expected congressional negotiations later this year about the Dreamers, who were brought to the United States as small children and often have few ties to the countries of their birth.

Short said a review of USA immigration laws requested by Trump identified three major issues: the need to remove undocumented immigrants at the border; enforcing immigration standards in the interior US, including visa overstays; and ending a policy of allowing immigration based on extended-family relationships in the USA, which he termed unfair to taxpayers and citizens.

Last month, the president abruptly ended an Obama-era policy called Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, in which former President Barack Obama had used his executive authority to protect about 800,000 of the young immigrants from the threat of deportation and provide them legal work permits.

The White House said in order to properly protect the nation's borders, Congress must approve of the construction of a border wall to deter human trafficking, drug trafficking, and other cartels.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer were quick to pan the list, saying it shows Trump "can't be serious" about reaching a deal if they start with proposals that are "anathema" to immigrants and Democrats. "We told the President at our meeting that we were open to reasonable border security measures alongside the DREAM Act, but this list goes so far beyond what is reasonable". "This proposal fails to represent any attempt at compromise". About 690,000 recipients are now enrolled in the program, and their work permits are due to expire in March 2018.

"There was a deal to work on a deal as fast as possible", the official said.

The deal also takes a hardline stance against unaccompanied minors who enter the country.

The attorney general, Jeff Sessions, an immigration hardliner who announced the rollback of the Daca program last month, welcomed the proposals, which he said "will restore the rule of law to our immigration system, prioritize America's safety and security, and end the lawlessness". Charles E. Schumer of NY said in a statement.
