Al Shabaab kill Technical University of Mombasa staff”

Kieng says two police officers who were in the vehicle and the driver also sustained bullet wounds and were rushed to hospital.

Two staff members were killed and several students were wounded in Kenya when gunmen fired on vehicles carrying students to the Technical University of Mombasa's campus in coastal Kwale county on Tuesday, a police official and a witness said.

Regional police commander Larry Kieng said the assailants sprayed a private auto with the bullets, killing the two from the Technical University of Mombasa on the spot.

Acting County Commissioner Mwangi Kahiro confirmed the incident saying the vehicle registration number KBL 566G, was taking the two Administration Police officers to the Kwale campus for guard duties when the gunmen struck and sprayed the auto with bullets.

A month ago suspected Islamic militants attacked a church in the area killing two police officers and stealing their rifles.

He said a team of security officers were mobilized and are hunting down the gunmen suspected to be Al-Shabaab returnees. "The other AP officer and the driver are out of danger", said the Commissioner, adding that the motive of the attack is still unknown.

Somalia's al-Shabab militia has been carrying out attacks on Kenya saying they are retribution for Kenyan troops deployed in Somalia to fight the rebels.
