Duterte ratings drop, a 'wake-up call', opposition lawmaker says

Duterte ratings drop, a 'wake-up call', opposition lawmaker says”

"I think we shouldn't be anxious because if we break down the survey results, putting it in context and considering the satisfaction and trust ratings of previous Presidents in previous administrations, President Duterte is still doing very well", Davao City Rep. Karlo Nograles said.

Duterte's net satisfaction rating among Classes A, B, and C last June 2017 is 59 points, while he got 66 points among the Filipino masses.

The rally was organized in the wake of allegations that Duterte has billions of illegally obtained pesos parked in bank accounts and calls from the opposition for the president to step down. More than 800 people have died in the ongoing battle.

Quirino Rep. Dakila Cua said Duterte should continue his focus on his job and in making hard decision and not be anxious about ratings.

"President Duterte's authoritarian style of governance is losing its appeal and support among the public".

"It's very encouraging to know that the Filipino people are beginning to see the light", said Senator Antonio Trillanes, a fierce opponent who has recently accused Duterte of concealing assets when he was Davao City mayor.

Casilao said the economic problems besetting the country's growing number of poor Filipinos has worsened by the government's illegal war on drugs and all-out war against the communist rebels and Moro people under the government's counter-insurgency operation "Oplan Kapayapaan".

"Recent weeks' developments have not been generally favorable to President Duterte, but his base of support remains solid, in my view".

Sen. Francis Escudero said Duterte's "arrogant and insensitive officials" in the campaign against illegal drugs, whom he did not name, were partly to blame for the decline in his ratings.

"The change in the President's satisfaction rating, from 78 percent in June to 67 percent in September, and trust rating, from 82 percent in June to 73 percent in September, is expected given the fact that people start measuring their expectations usually after the honeymoon period, or after a year in office", Abella said during a briefing in Malacañang.

Duterte's net satisfaction rating declined by 18 points in the September 2017 survey by the Social Weather Stations (SWS) released on Sunday, October 8.

Duterte's spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the survey results.

"The 16 million who voted for him in May 2016, I believe are still there", she said.

Gatchalian countered though that this does not mean that the administration should be complacent.
