Ferrari's season 'not lost', insists Marchionne”

According to a recent report by The Street, Fiat Chrysler (FCAU) CEO Sergio Marchionne said, "We still don't have a viable economic model for delivering an electric vehicle". A faulty spark plug - detected on the grid just moments before lights out - proved a terminal issue and led to the German's costly retirement in Suzuka.

Sebastian Vettel's title hopes have been all but dashed after a crash in Singapore, followed by engine troubles in Malaysia and Japan, have allowed rival Lewis Hamilton to open up a 59-point advantage in the standings.

"It's been a long time since Ferrari have been as competitive and the problems of recent weeks haven't erased that fact". It's a problem we've probably ignored over time because it was never of much importance.

Marchionne said Ferrari, who failed to win any races past year, had still made huge steps with Vettel winning four times this season and leading the championship from March to September. Despite his team's dwindling title chances in both world championships, Marchionne is adamant Ferrari still has time to recover its F1 campaign.

"I do not speak about bad luck because I do not believe it", Marchionne added.

Sebastian Vettel is not out of the Formula One title race despite Ferrari's reliability woes and the Scuderia's vehicle is on par with Mercedes', says team president Sergio Marchionne. The important thing is to not lose the confidence that has brought us here so far. "I'm sure if we'd not had any problems like in the last three races, we would be having a different discussion".

Ferrari has enjoyed a resurgence in the sport in 2017, recording four race wins and becoming the first team to seriously challenge Mercedes in the championship since F1's switch to V6 hybrid engines in 2014.
