Google honors adventurer Fridtjof Nansen with a new Doodle”

Fridtjof Nansen, a Noble Peace Prize Laureate one of the most interesting lives in the 19th-20th centuries has received honoured on his 156th birthday. Today, on his 156 birth anniversary Google has dedicated a doodle for his achievements and contributions. In his youth, he trained himself to become a champion skier and ice skater while pursuing higher education.

He explored the world's unknown terrain and broke new ground as an global humanitarian.

Born in Oslo, Norway in 1861, Nansen was gripped by a sense of adventure from a young age and in 1888, he became the first person to lead an expedition across the snow-capped interior of Greenland. After that, he attempted to become the first man to reach the North Pole, but fell short and earned the distinction of getting closer than anyone before, reaching the northernmost latitude of any explorer. He learned to cross-country ski as many as 50 miles in one day with minimal supplies - and sometimes with just his dog! By 1920, his interests shifted from understanding the landscape of the world to influencing the worldwide political climate.

Google's homepage pays homage to Nansen's skiing trips by displaying an animated image of the explorer moving along on skis alongside artwork depicting his face, landscapes and a passport. Besides the Nobel Peace Prize, he also won Cullum Geographical Medal and Patron's Gold Medal. Post World War I, as Europe struggled to rebuild, Nansen directed the League of Nations' first major humanitarian operation - the repatriation of 450,000 prisoners of war, the UNHCR states. He was eventually awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1922 for his work helping those without a voice and searching for a home. He was appointed as the League's High Commissioner for Refugees in 1921. He created the Nansen Passport, which also found its place on the doodle prepared by the search giant Google.
