Interactive road crossing uses LEDs to alert road users

Interactive road crossing uses LEDs to alert road users”

Dubbed the "Starling Crossing" by designers from United Kingdom technology company Umbrellium, it aims to update the traditional British zebra crossing with the help of a neural network and tracking cameras, which can calculate the trajectory of anyone walking across its surface.

While Umbrellium's creation is clearly just a concept for now, smart road crossings are already cropping up around the world to cater to the new generation of "smartphone zombies" or "smombies".

It works by using cameras that can track objects moving across the road surface, which calculates their precise location and anticipates their next move by analysing their direction and speed.

Although the crossing uses traditional markings, it can modify their patterns, size, layout and position to prioritise pedestrian safety.

The crossing can also alter itself based on the time of day.

And yes, it remains slip free in pouring rain too.

This means a thick red line lights up across the road when someone walks out unexpectedly - such as a person staring at their mobile phone.

"We're trying to update the design with a crossing that deals with the fact that people are on mobile phones and might not be looking up", Usman Haque from Umbrellium said.

THEY'RE the bane of motorists' lives - and cause potentially unsafe incidents each day.

"Pedestrian crossings as we know them were made for a different age, when the human relationship with the city was completely different."
As previously reported, some 350 child pedestrians were killed or seriously injured by vehicles in the third quarter of 2016.

A prototype of the new crossing was showcased near Mitcham after being developed by tech firm Umbrellium in partnership with insurance company Direct Line.

Jason Wakeford of road safety charity Brake, said: "This is a great example of how technology can help to improve road safety". At the time of writing, there are no plans to do so.
