Isco 'approached by pitch invader with KNIFE' during Spain clash with Israel

Isco 'approached by pitch invader with KNIFE' during Spain clash with Israel”

"As he made his way towards the player, the knife fell out of his hands; he was apprehended by police before he could get close to Isco", The Times of Israel reported.

Marca picks up on a report on Israeli website Ynet which suggests one of the invaders, who was running in Isco's direction, dropped a knife on the pitch before police intercepted him.

Real Sociedad midfielder Asier Illarramendi scored a thumping first worldwide goal to give Spain a 1-0 win away to Israel in Group G on Monday, which rounded off their World Cup qualifying campaign with a ninth victory in 10 games.

Spain lacked the spark with which they had played their previous qualifiers, but still had the better of the chances and it took four impressive saves from Israel goalkeeper Ariel Harush to prevent the visitors leading before the interval.

The match was held in Jerusalem at Teddy Stadium, the ground used by Beitar Jerusalem, a team known for its nationalist fanbase and right-wing ultra group known as La Familia.

Who's already qualified for the 2018 World Cup?

Israel hadn't reached a World Cup since 1970 and faced troubles with security throughout qualifying.

They won nine of their 10 qualifying matches, drawing the other, and finished top of Group G, five points clear of second-place Italy.
