ISIS terror plot thwarted in NYC a year ago”

Haroon called the NY subway the "perfect" target and suggested that they use assault weapons to begin the attack and follow it by detonating their suicide vests, the same tactic used by several of the Paris attackers.

Two other men, 19-year-old Talha Haroon, an American citizen living in Pakistan, and Russell Salic, a 37-year-old Filipino, helped with the planning of the attack.

El Bahnasawy: "In the spring of 2016, I agreed with others to carry out an attack in Times Square, to support ISIL; specifically, we agreed to try to set off a bomb in Times Square".

US authorities said a 19-year-old Canadian pleaded guilty to terrorism-related charges in connection with what they call an ISIS-inspired plot to target landmarks in New York City more than a year ago, including Times Square and the city's subway system.

On May 21, 2016, El Bahnasawy was arrested in New Jersey, after traveling to the United States from Canada in preparation for carrying out the NYC Attacks. "El Bahnasawy planned to build the explosive devices and prepare for the NYC Attacks with Haroon and the (undercover officer) at a rural cabin within driving distance of New York City", a charge sheet released Friday afternoon by the acting U.S. Attorney of Manhattan reads. Haroon, who at one point met with an explosives expert in Pakistan for information on building bombs, told the undercover agent the subway was a "perfect" place to shoot passengers, and that "when we run out of bullets we let the vests go off", the court papers said.

El Bahnasawy, Haroon, and Salic have been charged with multiple crimes and will be facing life sentences. The trio also talked about blowing up a vehicle in Times Square. All three men have been arrested and one has pled guilty. "I used the Internet and sent materials through the mail in furtherance of the conspiracy, and I also traveled from Canada to the United States".

"That's a day that will change history", he allegedly said.

Prosecutors said that Al Bahnasawy and Haroon identified the 7 and 4/5/6 subway lines and Times Square as ideal targets and talked about trapping people inside the Crossroads of the World "and kill as many people as possible".

"We just need guns in our hands", El Bahnasawy said.

Haroon was arrested in Pakistan in or about September 2016, and SALIC was arrested in the Philippines in or about April 2017.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of NY says the Canadian, identified as Abdulrahman El Bahnasawy, of Mississauga, Ont., has been in custody since the Federal Bureau of Investigation arrested him in New Jersey in May 2016. They're awaiting extradition to the United States, and it's unclear if they have attorneys.
