NFLPA president DeMaurice Smith blasts owners banning national anthem protest

NFLPA president DeMaurice Smith blasts owners banning national anthem protest”

"Why is the National Football League getting massive tax breaks while at the same time disrespecting our Anthem, Flag and Country?" he wrote. "He's fired! He's fired!'"

After Trump's aforementioned comments, more than 200 NFL players protested during the national anthem on September 24.

Kneeling during the anthem was initially started by former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who sought to draw attention to social injustice and police brutality.

While many teams have resumed standing for the anthem and making gestures like placing their hands on their shoulders or linking arms, kneeling hasn't stopped altogether.

Smith released a statement, which was a not-so-subtle shot at Cowboys owner Jerry Jones - who revealed on Sunday that his players would be benched should they not stand during the national anthem. While the league has attracted criticism for using public money for new stadiums -a March 2017 ESPN article put the bill for the taxpayer on new stadiums and renovations to old ones since 1997 at $6.7 billion, including the Oakland Raiders' upcoming move to Las Vegas that will come in at nearly $1 billion-it has moved in recent years to close up one tax loophole.

"Understand? We will not ... if we are disrespecting the flag, then we will not play". Prior to 2015, the NFL central office had been granted tax-exempt status, but the league already made a decision to relinquish the exemption two years ago.

Player protests in the National Football League have spiked dramatically after Trump verbally attacked players kneeling during the anthem, by saying "wouldn't you love to see one of the National Football League owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say 'get that son of a b**** off the field right now?"

Mr Trump wrote: "With Jemele Hill at the mike, it is no wonder ESPN ratings have 'tanked, ' in fact, tanked so badly it is the talk of the industry!" Trump said in a tweet later on Sunday evening that he had asked Pence to walk out if more protests occurred.

The Flag Code, which was drawn up in 1923, covers all aspects of etiquette in relation to the Stars and Stripes, including how to behave when the anthem is played.

The code states that people are expected to stand and face the flag, if there is one. A recent amendment to the code said that military personnel out of uniform could also salute.
