Trump calls for tax changes for NFL following national anthem protests”

"No player is disrespecting our Country or our Flag".

According to Brandon George of The Dallas Morning News, Jones said part of their conversation was "about an NFL policy in game operations manual that dictates players stand for the national anthem".

Dozens of players have been kneeling down during the pre-match national anthem, instead of standing, in anger at comments made by the president.

Jemele Hill had urged a boycott of Dallas Cowboys advertisers after the club's owner said players would be dropped if they refused to stand during the national anthem. "Understand? We will not. if we are disrespecting the flag, then we will not play".

President Donald Trump threatened Tuesday to use federal tax law to penalize the National Football League over players who kneel in protest during the national anthem as he sought to escalate a political fight that has resonated with his conservative base.

On Sunday, US Vice-President Mike Pence walked out of an National Football League game between Indianapolis Colts and the San Francisco 49ers after several players refused to stand. As of the writing of this article, he said no member of his team's management or coaching staff had contacted him. Trump said in a tweet later on Sunday evening that he had asked Pence to walk out if more protests occurred. "He is receiving great praise for leaving game after the players showed such disrespect for country!"

Speaking to Sports Illustrated, an NFL spokesperson said: "The national anthem must be played prior to every NFL game, and all players must be on the sideline for the national anthem. We respect our flag", Trump said to loud applause at the campaign event. One NFL linebacker told The Root: "They didn't say what would happen. He's fired! He's fired!'" The practice has caught on since it was started by Colin Kaepernick, the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback, at the start of the 2016-17 regular season in protest at police brutality against black people in the U.S. A number of players followed Kaepernick's lead by taking a knee during the anthem previous year.

ESPN's Don Van Natta and Seth Wickersham reported on October 1 that the league and team owners held meetings about how to stop protests in the wake of league-wide player demonstrations following Trump's comments.
