United Kingdom must stamp out racial discrimination, says Theresa May”

A website launched by the government today showing how life can differ depending on race - apparently the first of its kind in the world - claims that nearly every ethnic group in the United Kingdom feels a strong sense of British identity.

But those from poorer backgrounds suffered most, with just under a third (32%) of white British children on free school meals reaching the expected standard.

"This audit means that for society as a whole - for government, for our public services - there is nowhere to hide".

The event was attended by a number of campaigners, including Jabeer Butt from the Race Equality Foundation, Omar Khan from the Runnymede Trust, Kunle Olulode from Voice4Change and Matilda MacAttram from Black Mental Health.

"Britain has come along way in promoting equality and opportunity but what the data we've published today shows is that we still have a way to go if we are going to truly have a country that works for everyone".

A review of pupil exclusion in schools will be announced with a focus on those most likely to be affected.

To launch the new website, thought to be the first official resource of its kind in the world, Mrs May will host a discussion around the Cabinet table involving "key stakeholders".

The Prime Minister's official spokesman said she described how on a school visit on Monday in south London she had met a black student who had wanted to be a lawyer. These issues are now out in the open.

Mr Javid insisted the Conservatives were the right party to tackle issues revealed by the audit, despite their fall in popularity amongst black and minority ethnic voters at June's General Election.

White people, Indians and Pakistanis are more likely to own their own home than Black people or people from Bangladesh, the study shows. She said that she was determined to root out "burning injustices" and she expected to have a parliamentary majority to make that possible.

Dawn Butler, Labour's shadow women and equalities secretary, claimed the report is "not enough" as she called for "solutions".

David Isaac, chairman of the Equality and Human Rights Commission, said the report must be used tackle the "entrenched inequality" in the United Kingdom, and to "set the foundations for real change".

And Mr Woolley praised the Prime Minister for showing "a real desire to grapple with the scourge of racism" - highlighting her challenging of high levels of ethnic minorities subjected to police stop and searches and non-white deaths in police custody.
