A Lone Democrat Just Introduced Articles of Impeachment Against Trump”

In a letter to Democratic congressional offices and the party's House and Senate campaign committees obtained by the New York Times, Steyer demanded that Democratic candidates in 2018 support impeaching President Trump.

The Texas congressman's maneuver is expected to force a vote either Thursday or Friday, putting fellow Democrats in an awkward spot. Given that the House, like the Senate, is Republican-controlled, the articles were always likely to be tabled, but then, in a self-defeating move, Green failed to show up when the presiding officer began the process of consideration.

On Oct. 11, Green unveiled articles of impeachment against Trump, asserting that the president's conduct merited removal from office under the 25th Amendment.

A host of celebrities called for the president's impeachment in August following the tragedy in Charlottesville, which Trump blamed on "both sides".

This time Green contended that Trump should not have to be convicted of a crime to be impeached and forced from office.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders called the effort "pathetic" in a tweet Wednesday.

In almost 20 minutes of floor remarks Wednesday, Green inveighed against Trump for having "produced a demonstrable record of inciting white supremacy, sexism, bigotry, hatred, xenophobia, race baiting and racism by demeaning, defaming, disrespecting and disparaging women and certain minorities". He also accused Trump of "perfidy" in making the unsubstantiated claim that millions of people voted illegally in the 2016 presidential election.

The fourth article accuses the president of "encouraging law enforcement officials to violate the Constitutional rights of the suspects in their case". "Mr. Speaker, I announce that impeachment is postponed". "This is a time for our nation to mourn and for hearts to heal".

The Republican-led House will reportedly vote to table the resolution today.

"Many members are telling him that this is a fruitless effort and will end in a complicated vote that can not be easily explained", a senior Democratic aide said.

"Resolved that Donald J. Trump, president of the United States of America, has undermined the integrity of his office with impunity and brought disrepute on the presidency with immunity, has betrayed his trust as president to the manifest injury of the American people and is unfit to be president", Green continued.

Congress can only remove the president with a vote by two-thirds of the Senate. This could still put some Democrats in a bad spot, as they will likely face pressure from outside liberal groups to vote against tabling the articles.

Green filed a privileged resolution, meaning that the House of Representatives has to act on the measure within two legislative days.
