Amazon's Latest Kindle Oasis Is Cheaper Than Its Predecessor

Amazon's Latest Kindle Oasis Is Cheaper Than Its Predecessor”

While it appears lopsided, it actually feels balanced when you hold the Oasis one-handed.

The resolution of the e-paper display is the same at 300 ppi, but it has a couple extra LED lights now for a brighter, more even-looking display.

That screen has a pixel density of 300ppi and displays text that looks as sharp as it does on the pages of a paperback. During a demo of the new device last week, Amazon confirmed to VentureBeat that the very same Audible integration will be added to the first-generation Kindle Oasis that launched previous year - via an over-the-air (OTA) update in the coming months.

Innovating an ereader is a hard task and something Amazon has struggled with in its most recent iterations of the Kindle brand. Amazon reduced the new Oasis's bezel size and moved to a slightly larger frame to fit in the bigger screen.

In fact, my opinion at the time was that Amazon had, in the original Oasis, achieved something close to perfection in e-reader form.

At £229, the company's high-end e-reader is now £40 less than the combined price of 6in Oasis and battery cover a year ago.

The new Oasis doesn't feel as unnaturally light as the last model, which was one of my favorite aspects of that e-reader.

Amazon hasn't fiddled around too much with the innards of the new Oasis 2, which considering the original is a perfectly fast piece of kit is by no means an issue.

The retail giant unveiled its revamped Kindle Oasis on Wednesday that's cheaper than the previous version, is waterproof, and has a bigger display. It has a rating of IPX8, which means it can withstand immersion in up to two meters of freshwater for up to 60 minutes.

Furthermore, the original Oasis had a built-in battery that promised around two weeks of power, but it also shipped with a separate battery cover that connected to the Oasis via a little port on the rear to give it another seven weeks. And yet Amazon has also reduced the price.

Audible audiobook support has also, finally, arrived.

Of course, you'll still have to buy the Audible and Kindle releases separately. But if you spend a lot of time reading and a significant proportion of your day on the road listening to audiobooks, it might just be worth the investment.

Amazon also included a few helpful accessibility features in the new Oasis. That should make it easier to read at night. The $120 Kindle Paperwhite will likely remain the most sensible buy for most people who're still interested in an e-reader in 2017, but it's aging, so the new Oasis could make more sense as a luxury gadget for book lovers who use a Kindle often and just want the nicest thing possible.

I didn't have much time to demo the new Oasis, but it's certainly intriguing.

One recurring criticism of the Amazon Kindle over the years has been that if you like to read in the bath, well, you'll be out of luck if you drop the device. It looks to be only a fraction of a second faster than the last model, but it's one step closer to instantaneous E-Ink page turning. The 32GB wifi-only model is £259.99m and the 32GB version with free cellular connectivity (for downloading books while anywhere) is £319.99.
