Arrested MP Namal sends a message to UN Human Rights Council”

A police spokesman said MP Namal Rajapaksa was arrested Tuesday for being a member of an unlawful assembly outside the Indian consulate in the southern town of Hambantota on Friday.

Later, they were arrested and remanded until 16th of October by the Hambantota Additional District Judge Manjula Karunarathna.

Government spokesman and Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne said it was ironic that Rajapaksa who had accused the United Nations rights body of interfering in Sri Lanka seeking the help of the same organisation when he is arrested.

MP Namal Rajapaksa who was remanded after being arrested last night (10), has sent a message via Twitter, to the UN Human Rights Council over the arrest of a group of MPs including himself.

Those arrested yesterday around 7.30 pm after their statements were recorded along with Namal Rajapaksa MP includes - D.V. Chanaka Dinushan MP, Bulathwalage Prasanna Ranaweera MP, Provincial Councillor Upali Kodikara and Provincial Councillor Ajith Prasanna.

The protesters led by the parliamentarians defying a court order approached the Indian Consulate in Hambantota and clashed with the police. He was referring to China being given to handle operations of Hambantota sea port and an Indian company being given of operations of the airport. G.L. SP Gunasekara stated that 34 other suspects have been arrested and remanded in connection to the incident.

Supporters of the suspects were present near the Hambantota Police Station.

"#SriLanka Police arrested us 4 our peaceful protest against selling national assets, stifling opposition voices".
