Delhi Metro fares go up

Delhi Metro fares go up”

The decision to increase the fares was taken after a meeting of the Delhi Metro Fare Fixation Committee on Monday.

"The Delhi Metro fare hike will affect my budget by Rs. 700, but if we want facilities similar to America, then we'll have to pay", another metro commuter said. Holding placards and shouting slogans, the protestors voiced their anger against the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).

The latest increase drew strong reactions from commuters, with some saying they would consider alternative public transport. "The hike is not fair. Who will be happy with such a steep rise, that too twice in a year?" said Ajay, a 40-year-old finance sector employee who commutes from Paschim Vihar to Rajiv Chowk.

"It has nearly doubled. Till yesterday, I was charged Rs 27 and today I shelled out '40 for the same distance", he said. This is not a good thing.

"The fare hike is disappointing as it will hit the common man and students", said BJP-SAD MLA Manjinder Singh Sirsa, participating in a calling attention motion on the Metro fare hike in the Assembly today.

Another commuter, Sushant, who is a theatre artist, was also unhappy. The survey revealed that around 61.57 per cent women said they would face severe issues in managing their household expenses following the fare hike.

He termed the decision to hike the fares as unfortunate and questioned the idea of increasing fare despite a hike a few months ago.

Rai said that the AAP will launch a "satyagraha" across the national Capital to demand a rollback and protest outside all metro stations on Wednesday and will gherao Nirman Bhawan, the office of the Union Urban Development Ministry, on Thursday.

"In some cases, the fare difference between Metro and shared cab rides would be minimal but people may not mind paying a bit more for cab rides", Bhardwaj told IANS.

A day after NSUI's protest at Vishwavidyalaya Metro station over the metro fare hike, members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad on Tuesday staged a protest outside the Delhi Metro headquarters on Barakhamba Road demanding immediate withdrawal of the fare hike.
