Dell to Invest $1 Billion in 'Internet of Things'”

In a media event here October 10, CEO Michael Dell and other officials unveiled a program that includes the creation of a new internet of things (IoT) division within the company as well as a plan to invest $1 billion over the next three years in developing new IoT products and services, investing in IoT technology companies, expanding its development labs and technology partner program with a complementary technology ecosystem.

At the beginning of 2017, just months after the creation of the umbrella that is Dell Technologies following the merger with EMC, the company realized that while it had many singular IoT products and solutions across the board, and it understood the impact that IoT will have, but it did not have a singular IoT message.

IoT has grown quite a bit in the last few years.

The company's new IoT Division will be led by Ray O'Farrell, CTO, VMware, and now General Manager of the Dell IoT Division, and he is chartered with orchestrating the development of IoT products and services across the Dell Technologies family. Dell Technologies is addressing this issue with its "distributed core".

Hitachi will say that, since it makes IoT systems itself, it can integrate them better with its own IT hardware and software than any third party.

Dell already offerings a range of products and services for the IoT, including Edge Gateways to bring compute and analytics to the network edge and closer to the connected devices, which are secured and managed by VMware's Pulse IoT Control Center.

PowerEdge C-Series Servers from Dell EMC have been enhanced for batch training and machine learning as part of the distributed core. Also on analytics is Pivotal Cloud Foundry (PCF) and Pivotal Container Service (PKS) for cloud-based analytics applications.

The initiative involves not only taking advantage of the deep infrastructure capabilities developed over the past several decades by Dell and EMC, but also initiating new software development projects that touch on everything from data analytics and security to management.

Pivoting to IOT edge computing, where the public cloud has no role to play, being too slow to respond to real-time needs and having slow and costly network pipes fir massive data uplinks, gives Dell a lifeline.

Project Worldwide Herd for performing analytics on geographically dispersed data. Dell Technologies will provide a cloud-like payment options through Dell Financial Services flexible consumption models.

GE is IoT machinery (Operational Technology, or OT) with little native IT. Vantara has both OT and IT. Dell is IoT IT with no OT. Seeded by Dell source code, EdgeX Foundry is a vendor-neutral open source project building a common interoperability framework to facilitate an ecosystem for edge computing.

As Jeremy Burton, CMO of Dell Technologies, explained it to Canadian media, Dell Technologies as a whole went on a fact-hunting mission to discover what benefits and opportunities could arise from IoT, and this summer it became apparent that there would need to be an entirely new IoT division that would encompass everything IoT within Dell Technologies.
