Equifax ups its estimates of British victims of hack to 700000”

After adding an additional 2.5 million American victims, the company has now revealed that the data of over 15.2 million United Kingdom customers has also been stolen. The company announced last week that the total number of Americans affected was 145.5 million, not 143 million as it first announced.

Equifax today revised up its calculation of how many British consumers may have had personal information stolen earlier this year, revealing the hack on the credit reporting agency compromised the records of nearly 700,000 people.

United States credit reporting bureau Equifax has revealed that 15.2 million United Kingdom records were stolen in the breach it said occurred in May and disclosed in September.

The company denied in September that the stolen United Kingdom data included any addresses, passwords or financial information.

Equifax was forced to acknowledge the extra exposed data after Mandiant, the U.S. cybersecurity firm investigating the breach, found an extra trove of stolen data.

Equifax has now revealed that out of 15.2 million consumers, almost 700,000 have had their personal data stolen that included their usernames, passwords, driving license numbers, and partial credit card details.

The company said its investigation found that it would need to contact 693,665 British consumers by post to tell them how to protect against any potential risk.

The information held by the American credit monitoring firm included partial credit card details, phone numbers and driving licence serial numbers.

The US-based company said 14.5 million of the records breached, which dated from 2011 to 2016, did not contain information that put British consumers at risk.

"The NCSC, with Equifax and partners including the NCA, ICO and FCA, continues to examine this incident and should further information come to light about the extent and nature of the impact on the United Kingdom, we will provide further updates and advice as soon as we can", it said.
