The annual Great American Beer Festival welcomed breweries from 13 different countries last weekend, but rest assured, Philadelphia's brewers did the city proud. Eight & Sand Beer Co.'s Bad Hombre won silver in the category of Chili Beer, which had 98 entries, and River Horse Brewing Co. earned the bronze in the Belgian-style Tripel category for its Tripel Horse beer.

This year America's premier beer fest and competition attracted more than 2,200 breweries vying for best-in-class medals in almost 100 different style categories. These awards are among the most coveted in the industry and heralded by the winning brewers in their national advertising. The ultimate goal of the judge panel is to identify the three beers that best represent each beer-style category as described and adopted by the Great American Beer Festival.

Iron Hill was the veteran brewery representing the Philadelphia area at the competition, with its latest honors bringing its total to 47 awards over the years, but the brewery was also joined by nine other winners from Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. reports the beers were judged by almost 300 experts and the festival is the world's largest commercial beer competition. A full list of winners is posted on GABF's website. Medals are coveted by large and small brewers alike. The brewery produces exclusively craft lagers, influenced by German lagers with an American craft beer twist.
