Jon Walters Deals Ireland Injury Blow Ahead Of Playoffs”

Jonathan Walters has been ruled out of the Republic of Ireland's World Cup play-off games, Press Association Sport understands.

Today, Sky Sports are reporting that the Burnley frontman will be out "until at least Christmas", thus missing out on Ireland's play-off next month.

He has played just 27 minutes in the Premier League for the Clarets this season having made the move to Turf Moor in the summer.

The forward has had clean-up operations on his knee twice in the past 18 months, in March 2016 and in January of this year.

The 34-year-old has not featured for club or country since the beginning of September, when playing a full part in his national side's 1-1 draw in Georgia, due to the recurring issue.

Ireland will face a two-legged tie to qualify for next summer's tournament in Russian Federation after their 1-0 win in Cardiff.

Ireland have to wait until Tuesday to learn their opponents for the play-off, as they will be drawn with one of Italy, Croatia, Denmark and Switzerland. "I'd have to speak to Alan Byrne, our doctor, but he hasn't played for some time and the play-offs are in early November".
