Nissan reveals the gamer's dream: a PlayStation remote controlled GT-R

Nissan reveals the gamer's dream: a PlayStation remote controlled GT-R”

Nissan also runs the GT Academy race series that brings console racing drivers into the real world - Aussie racer Matt Simmons, who is now running in the 2017 Blancpain GT Endurance series, got his start by winning the worldwide 2015 GT Academy.

Six computers in the boot update controls 100 times a second. All this, to celebrate the launch of the new Gran Turismo Sport game, available from October 18 in Australia.

The GT-R /C, as it has been named, has been modified by United Kingdom firm JLB Design with mechanical parts to control the steering, throttle and brakes, as well as the gear selector, so it can be driven externally without anyone on board.

The GT-R /C was put through its paces by NISMO athlete and GT Academy victor Jann Mardenborough around Silverstone's famous National Circuit. And it performed: the auto topped out at 210km/h on the National Circuit's longest straight and recorded a best lap time of 1:17.47, as well as an average speed of 122km/h versus the human-driven car's average of 134km/h.

Aside from the remote control robots and computers the GT-R in question was unmodified, with no restriction on its 196mph top speed - although a pair of independent safety systems were fitted, allowing two operators to take control should anything untoward have occurred. The controller can send data wirelessly to the vehicle from up to one kilometer away.

Check out Mardenborough driving the GT-R /C via remote control in the video below.

A Racelogic VBOX Motorsport sensor relayed speed information to an LCD display in the helicopter for Mardenborough to judge speeds with.

In case Mardenborough's wireless connection was lost, the vehicle was also fitted with two independent safety systems that allowed two additional operators to slam on the ABS brakes and cut power to the engine if need be. "This was once-in-a-lifetime, truly epic stuff".

Mardenborough, who was discovered by Nissan when he won the gaming GT Academy in 2011 before being thrust into a professional motorsport career, said: "The GT-R /C has brought my two worlds together - the virtual one of gaming and the reality of motorsport - in a way I never thought possible". JLB Design has done an incredible job at making everything respond really well. "Now that's innovation that excites!"

In 2018, the Nissan GT-R /C will be used in a tour of primary and secondary schools in the United Kingdom to promote future careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects.
