Red Sox manager John Farrell won't return in 2018

Red Sox manager John Farrell won't return in 2018”

John Farrell has been fired as Boston Red Sox manager.

Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement Wednesday, ending Farrell's five-year tenure as manager after spending four years as the team's pitching coach earlier in his career. His contract ended with the season and had a 2018 team option that Boston is declining. They were swept out of the Division Series by the Indians last season and lost 3-1 to the Astros this year.

The Red Sox say a search for a new manager will begin immediately.

Boston finished this season with the third-best record in the American League, but was eliminated in the ALDS for a second straight season. In total, his record as the manager stands at 432-378, earning three division titles (2013, 2016, 2017).

Farrell's first season in 2013 was highlighted by Boston's eighth World Series championship.

Farrell is 586-548 (.517 winning percentage) overall as a major league manager.
