Catholicism falls in Louth as those without a religion jumps 80%

Catholicism falls in Louth as those without a religion jumps 80%”

Of those who chose "no religion", over 40% of these were from the Dublin region, with the average age of those selecting this option being 34 - four years younger than those registered as Catholic.

Nearly 470,000 people, meanwhile, said they had no religion - compared to 204,151 in 2011. This was a fall of 53 (-20.1%) on the number in 2011 (264).

The number of Roman Catholics is on the decline in Ireland; the 3,729,115 Catholics recorded in Census 2016 was 132,220 fewer than the last Census in 2011, with the overall percentage decreasing from 84.2% to 78.3%. However, this was down from 143,383 persons five years previously, a drop of -3.1% since 2011.

According to the CSO figures, 31.9% of 15-29 year-old Travellers were married, compared to just 5.8% of the rest of the population.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the average age of marriage is much lower in Traveller families, with those families likely going on to have much more children than the average household.

Catholicism remains the predominant religion in Meath, accounting for 82.1 per cent (160,140) of Meath's population, down 0.2 per cent from 2011.

As for ethnicity, in April 2016, those who indicated a "White Irish" ethnic or cultural background amounted to 70,413 people (83.4% of the county's population), an increase of 1,705 on 2011.

They now make up 10% of the population, making them the second largest category in the breakdown of affiliations under the "Religion" heading in the Census.

This was followed by "any other White background" at 9.5 percent, "non-Chinese Asian" at 1.7 percent and "other incl. mixed background" at 1.5 percent.

Those with "Black or Black Irish (African/any other Black background)" comprised 888 persons (2.2%) while 667 persons (1.6%) indicated an "Asian or Asian Irish (Chinese/any other Asian background)".

Members of the Church of Ireland decreased slightly, as did the number of Presbyterians.

However, the Church of Ireland, with 126,414 members at last year's census, experienced a 2% decrease.

Orthodox (677) and Muslims (573) completed the top five.

Deirdre Cullen, Senior Statistician, commented: "This report, the eighth of eleven thematic reports of Census 2016 results, provides further insight into the demographic structure of our population, this time looking at religion, ethnicity and Irish Travellers. As always all of this information is available on, where users can also access detailed data for their own area".
