GM announces production reduction at Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant

General Motors plans to idle its Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant for six weeks, according to a new report.

The No. 1 US carmaker plans to shut the Detroit-Hamtramck factory for about six weeks from mid-November and cut production by roughly 20% once operations resume, the source said. While the temporary layoff affects nearly 1,500 workers, when operations resume, 200 employees will be out of a job.

A GM spokesperson declined to comment.

The Hamtramck plant makes four sedan models that have not been performing well.

As consumer attitudes shift, automakers don't want to be stuck with a bevy of unwanted passenger cars.

Impala sales are off 32 percent through September, while Volt sales are down 6 percent and LaCrosse sales are off 21. With supply swelling, manufacturers have sought to curb production. This follows the elimination of a full shift, roughly 1,300 autoworkers, earlier this year. GM is also expected to let 200 workers go when production is cut next year. A GM spokesman says there are no plans to reinstate any of the eliminated shifts at this time.

GM and its peers have been cutting production at auto plants as consumers have rapidly shifted to buying sport utility vehicles.

GM has found alternative work for 2,900 affected hourly workers.

Shares of GM fell 1.4% to 44.82 on the stock market today, easing from the post-bankruptcy high of 45.59 set in Wednesday's session but still in profit-taking sell territory.
