GOP Senator Asks Trump If He's 'Recanting' Constitutional Oath”

"Are you tonight recanting the oath you took on January 20, to preserve, protect, and defend the First Amendment?". That led Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Nebraska, to release a statement asking if Trump was recanting his oath.

And he heard from a few critics as well, including Sean Hannity.

When later asked whether he wanted to place limits on the press, Trump said, "No". It cited two officials who said Trump asked the USA military to radically increase America's nuclear weapons stockpile during a meeting at the Pentagon in July.

"It's frankly disgusting the way the press is able to write whatever they want to write", Trump said at a White House photo op. "And people should look into it". "The press should speak more honestly". "Donald Trump's assertion that NBC's license could be challenged not only puts him in unfavorable company but emboldens other governments to embrace authoritarian tendencies". "By operation of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, and because the Communications Act expressly prohibits the Commission from censoring broadcast matter, our role in overseeing program content is very limited".

They stressed that the Federal Communications Commission "is charged with making sure that broadcasters serve the public interest", but "this independent agency does not and can not make such judgments either on the basis of political viewpoint or at the president's whim".

Trump's threats to curtail those rights sounded despotic to Brian Klass, an expert in democracy and authoritarian regimes at the London School of Economics. "This is unsafe for American democracy and requires a full bipartisan rebuke".

Democratic lawmakers also blasted Trump's statement, asserting that the president was threatening to infringe on the First Amendment in response to coverage that he did not like.

"Can't think of another", Schmidt said.
