Gucci Goes Fur Free, Looking to Change Luxury Sector

Gucci Goes Fur Free, Looking to Change Luxury Sector”

Speaking at the 2017 Kering Talk at the London College of Fashion, the Italian luxury fashion brand's CEO, Marco Bizzarri, announced that starting with their spring/summer 2018 collection, Gucci will join the Fur-Free Alliance. It is the latest of several fashion giants to make such a move.

Gucci's fur-free policy includes mink, coyote, raccoon dog, fox, rabbit and karakul (also known as swakara, Persian lamb or astrakhan) and all others species specially bred or caught for fur.

Gucci's president said the evolutions "demonstrate our absolute commitment to making sustainability an intrinsic part of our business".

"Being socially responsible is one of Gucci's core values, and we will continue to strive to do better for the environment and animals", Marco added.

Bizzarri said the new approach was made possible thanks to Gucci's creative director, Alessandro Michele, who was appointed in 2015.

Bizzarri told Vogue of the decision: "We've been talking about it, Alessandro [Michele] and I, for a few months".

A charity auction will reportedly be held to unburden Gucci's of its remaining fur clothing articles, with proceeds benefitting the Humane Society and LAV.

In what campaigners hailed as a "game changer" in the fight against the multibillion-pound fur trade, Gucci will no longer use the material from next spring.

Along with stopping the use of fur, Gucci also joined the Fur Free Alliance as part of a long-term partnership with The Humane Society and LAV.

Gucci will become part of the Fur Free Alliance - an worldwide group of organisations which campaigns on animal welfare and promotes alternatives to fur in the fashion industry.

Simone Pavesi, manager of animal free fashion for LAV, said: "Gucci's decision will radically change the future of fashion".

Fur farming was banned in the United Kingdom in 2000.
