Mini harks back to the past with limited-run 1499 GT

Mini harks back to the past with limited-run 1499 GT”

However, while the 1969 vehicle achieved its 1275cc capacity by boring out the engine of the then 998cc standard Mini, the new special edition replaces the 1.2-litre engine previously used in the MINI with a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo unit - it is understood the 1.2 engine is being phased out of the range to make it easier for the auto to meet future emission regulations. The all-new MINI 1499 GT treads a similar path for 2017. Powered by a 102bhp Twin Turbo engine, the MINI 1499 GT will accelerate from 0-60mph in a fraction over ten seconds. The order books are now open, with a production run stretching from November until February. Mini is also offering a deal - £299 deposit and £299 per month for the next 48 months, with a 10,000-mile annual limit and included insurance. On the road pricing starts at £16,990.

Buyers can choose from "Pepper White" or "Midnight Black", with 1499 GT side graphics in black and gold respectively.

A John Cooper Works Sport Pack is added, consisting of 17in black alloy wheels, dark tinted windows and white indicator lenses, while the auto also gains a JCW styling pack of bespoke front and rear bumpers, side skirts, spoiler and door kick plates. It's based on the entry-level model Mini One, but has styling features lifted straight from the range-topping John Cooper Works model. Interior features include John Cooper Works Sports seats, badges, and steering wheel, as well as multi-function controls, cruise control, a Visual Boost radio with MINI Connected smartphone compatibility and Piano Black interior trim, Carbon Black interior details and an Anthracite headlining. The 1499 GT, as it's called, is essentially a MINI One 3 Door hatch that's been given a smattering of extras on top. This includes features such as independent rear suspension, a six-speed manual gearbox with sports-car inspired rev matching technology, air conditioning and all-round disc brakes.
