Nick Kyrgios Fined $31085 for Incident at Shanghai Masters”

Shanghai: Temperamental Australian Nick Kyrgios was fined $10,000 and lost another $21,085 in prize money on Wednesday after storming off midway through his first-round match in Shanghai, tennis officials said. And the 22-year-old, for whom this was just the latest in a string of controversies, could yet face further punishment from the ATP after it fined Kyrgios for unsportsmanlike conduct.

He served a ban from the Shanghai Masters past year after "tanking" - showing a lack of effort - in a second-round match against Mischa Zverev and arguing with the umpire and fans.

Johnson wrapped up the set and Kyrgios decided he had had enough, shaking the hands of his opponent and the umpire - though not looking him in the eye - and packing his bag and leaving. According to ATP Tour rules, it is mandatory to be examined by a physician if injured.

In a statement posted on Twitter, which has since been deleted, he indicated he had been suffering from a "stomach bug" and that he had sustained a shoulder injury during practice ahead of his match against Johnson.

Kyrgios received a warning during the 12th game of the first set after hitting two balls in anger.

After being given a point penalty for an audible obscenity during the tie-break, the Australian was then heard to say he would quit if he lost the tie-break. He was docked a point to put the score to 4-4.

Kyrgios was banned for eight tournament weeks and fined a total of $41,500 after he appeared to tank at the same tournament previous year. "It felt like Atlanta in August". Also, Marin Cilic, a Wimbledon finalist this year, defeated Kyle Edmund of Britain 6-3, 7-6 (5) in the second round.

Zverev, 20, the German prodigy who is seeking his sixth title of a breakthrough season, joins sixth seed Grigor Dimitrov in the third round.

Ryan Harrison also advanced, beating Chinese wild-card entry Ze Zhang 6-2, 6-3, while US Open finalist Kevin Anderson defeated Adrian Mannarino 6-3, 6-1.
