Prisoners hurl pool balls at staff during riot

Specialist riot squads have been sent into a high-security prison after inmates took over a wing and attacked guards.

Long Lartin is a Category A prison, meaning it houses criminals who are seen as highly unsafe to the public.

A Prison Service spokesman said: "We are now managing an ongoing incident at HMP Long Lartin".

The Ministry of Justice confirmed it was dealing with a disturbance at Long Lartin prison, with staff reported to have retreated to safety.

Home Affairs Correspondent Danny Shaw said he understood "tornado teams" of riot officers had been sent to the prison.

The prison is famous for being the home to Abu Qatada, a notorious Islamist preacher, who detained there during part of his lengthy legal battle with the Home Office over his extradition to Jordan to face terrorism charges.

Around 80 inmates are believed to be rioting in the prison's E Wing, with staff forced to flee the area. Prisoners were reportedly confined to their cells for up to 24 hours a day.
