Royal Mail wins High court injunction preventing strike action

Royal Mail wins High court injunction preventing strike action”

Royal Mail has won an injunction in London's High Court preventing next week's 48-hour strike. Staff were also considering action during the Black Friday retail sales event next month or during the festive season.

It would have been the first national strike since Royal Mail was privatised four years ago.

The CWU has said that Royal Mail's move to reform workers' pensions means that its members will lose up to a third of their retirement entitlements.

The company has written to the CWU invoking a "legally binding external mediation process", and reiterating that any industrial action would be unlawful.

"Postal workers delivered a massive "Yes" vote for strike action and we are determined to take whatever steps are necessary to deliver an agreement that will protect and enhance our members' terms and conditions and improve the range of services on offer to customers", he said. The vote was a test for the union after the introduction of the Trade Union Act, which requires strike ballots to have a 50% turnout. It subsequently filed an injunction on Monday with the High Court.

On his way into the court, Ward said: "Court rooms don't solve disputes".

The firm had applied to block the industrial action orchestrated by the Communication Workers Union after claiming it was "unlawful" because the union had failed to follow previously agreed upon dispute resolution procedures.

Royal Mail said that it was "disappointed" by the decision to strike.

Royal Mail said talks would likely take until around Christmas time to complete, or possibly longer.

CWU disagreed, calling Royal Mail's legal challenge "underhanded" and "a deliberate attempt to misinterpret and use the agreement to stop postal workers exercising our right to strike".
