SC adjourns hearing of disqualification case against Jehangir Tareen till Tuesday next”

The CJP's remarks came during the hearing of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Hanif Abbasi's petition seeking disqualification of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)'s general secretary Jahangir Khan Tareen and chairman Imran Khan, as members of the National Assembly over allegations of concealing their sources of income.

Presenting his arguments, Mohmand had informed the court that his client has declared all his assets.

"Jahangir Tareen did not mention his exact earning from agricultural lands", CJP remarked.

On this occasion, the chief justice, while referring to the apex court verdict in the Panama Papers case, noted that the apex court had ruled in the said judgment that it could interfere and decide the matters pending with different forums whatsoever. However, he contested that the election forms do not contain a column for leased land. He added that Tareen did not mention his complete assets in the election forms.

The chief justice asked the learned counsel as to why his client did not declare in his nomination papers the income he earned from his leased land."Your client was required to declare both the incomes he earned from the land he owned and the land he got on lease but he did not", the chief justice asked the counsel for PTI general secretary.

In response, the lawyer agreed that to that definition of landholding, his client was obligated to declare his leased land in the forms.

On the contrary, Hanif Abbasi's lawyer argued, "Jahangir Tareen's dishonesty is obvious from day one".

Counsel for the petitioner Akram Sheikh objected to the land lease agreements submitted by Tareen and pointed out that these are not registered.

The Chief Justice expressed dissatisfaction over the argument that the owner can not pay tax over leased land.

"We are not concerned about tax", the chief justice said.

Tareen's lawyer maintained that his client can not be disqualified in this situation as he had not lied anywhere.

The chief justice told the learned counsel that the court was hearing a plea seeking disqualification of his client and the issue involved pertained to submitting misdeclarations before the Election Commission of Pakistan.

Tareen's counsel also argued that the ongoing case will have an effect on a reference underway in the Lahore High Court against his client.

The hearing was adjourned until Thursday.

At the core of the case is the matter of over 18,500 acres that were acquired by Tareen on a lease.

Tareen's lawyer told the court that only the name of the landowner appears on the records, not the name of the person farming the land.

According to our correspondent, the lawyer failed to satisfy the court regarding Tareen's tax payments and income from his agriculture land.
