Taika Waititi approached to direct live-action Akira but has whitewashing concerns”

Director Taika Waititi is eager to make a live-action version of Japanese graphic novel Akira featuring an all-Asian cast. Assuming a deal does stick, though, the latter noted that his version of Akira would be more loyal to the source material, as opposed to Katsuhiro Otomo's decorated sci-fi flick of '88. In an interview with IGN, Waititi talked about those rumours, addressed the concerns many fans have over another "whitewashing" scandal, and even discussed what his film would be aside from an anime remake. Specifically, he'd adapt the Akira books instead of remaking the anime, which had to greatly condense the story to fit into a two-hour runtime.

Casting directors had previously recruited Garett Hedlund and Kristen Stewart to take on lead roles in the big screen adaptation of Akira back in 2011, before that production fell apart, but if Waititi does agree to take charge of the live-action shoot, he won't be whitewashing the characters - and he would rather his stars be Hollywood newcomers. Love the movie, but I would not do a remake of the movie. "I would do an adaptation of the books". "And, yeah, so anyway there's been some chats [about directing it]". Various scripts have tried to transplant the story to a setting that would allow a mix of Asian and Western actors, including a version from Rogue One writer Gary Whitta that was set in a Japanese owned version of NY dubbed Neo-Manhattan.

The indie favorite behind "Boy" and "Hunt for the Wilderpeople" is earning strong reviews for his first American blockbuster, the Marvel superhero film "Thor: Ragnarok", and he's staying in the studio game for "Akira". "There was, I mean, I was in talks to do that, for sure, and something that I was very passionate about-am passionate about". It was there the site asked Waititi how he'd approach the film since he has been rumored as a front-running director for the project. Live action anime is also a tricky genre to tackle, and it hasn't fared well in recent times.

Taika Waititi's career behind the camera is about to skyrocket.
