Trump says Puerto Rico can't get aid 'forever'

Much of Puerto Rico's more than 3 million inhabitants are without power and many are without running water 12 days after Hurricane Maria wrecked the island.

Trump said earlier Thursday on Twitter that Puerto Rico has a "total lack of accountability" and "electric and all infrastructure was disaster before hurricanes". "We can not keep FEMA, the Military & the First Responders, who have been wonderful (under the most hard circumstances) in P.R. forever!" As of Thursday morning, about 64 percent of residents had water service restored, according to a recovery website managed by Puerto Rico's government.

The Environmental Protection Agency is warning Puerto Rico residents not to drink from wells at so-called "Superfund" sites amid reports that some on the island have sought water from the hazardous waste areas.

Democrats said Trump's attacks were "shameful", given that the 3 million-plus US citizens on Puerto Rico are confronting the kind of hardships that would draw howls of outrage if they affected a state.

The tweets Thursday morning are just the latest attacks the President has launched on the USA territory, which was devastated by two hurricanes last month.

Ryan said he didn't know about Trump's tweets.

The mayor tweeted that Trump is "incapable of fulfilling the moral imperative to help the people of PR. Shame on you!"

Carmen Yulin Cruz says on Twitter that Trump's words "seem more to come from a 'Hater in Chief".

"You still have people scrounging for stuff. Puerto Rico se levanta!"

Attkisson is a conservative journalist who has repeatedly defended Trump.

Water has been an issue in the weeks following Hurricane Maria, with residents tapping into pipes along the roadside and lining up at public spigots to trap water in any container they can carry.

FEMA says there are now some 19,000 federal civilian personnel and military service members - including more than 1,400 FEMA personnel - working in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. An additional $577 million would pay for western firefighting efforts. He has promised that the island will get what it needs.
