Channing Tatum's X-Men spin-off Gambit lands director, release date

Channing Tatum's X-Men spin-off Gambit lands director, release date”

The only other release that Valentine's Day is New Line's Isn't It Romantic. That, of course, relates to a chess move - aptly, the gambit - but more importantly it signals the movie is moving ahead at a good pace. The Channing Tatum-starring X-Men spinoff will hit theaters on February 14th, 2019, the studio announced on Thursday.

Entertainment Weekly confirmed the news today that Verbinski will direct the X-Men spin-off flick, which now has a release date of February 14, 2019.

The project had successfully sealed the deal with Gore Verbinski and with the Pirates of the Caribbean director set to helm the project, the studio made a decision to pin a date for Gambit. Whether the Gambit movie actually does get made and makes this release date is another story, though; a February 2019 release would put it almost two and a half years after its initial October 2016 projected release date. One thing I will say about Fox, is even if they have been rather disappointing with their recently handling of their X-Men films, the last two standalone films in Deadpool and Logan have proven to be massive success and as a studio they seem to at least be learning that fans are looking for something a little edgier than the normally family-oriented comic book movies we traditionally get.

Tatum's titular character, also known as Remy LeBeau, is a New Orleans-based mutant with special powers, including manipulating kinetic energy, and he has a deck of cards among his weapons.

Taylor Kitsch previously portrayed the character in the 2009 film "X-Men Origins: Wolverine".

Original director Rupert Wyatt left over budgetary disagreements and his replacement Doug Liman dropped out of the production because he "never found a personal connection" to the film.

The Gambit release date comes as Fox has been expanding its X-Men properties on the big screen, with 2018 seeing the release of New Mutants (set to open April 13), Deadpool 2 (June 1) and X-Men: Dark Phoenix (Nov. 2).
