Kobe Steel Falsified Quality Data for Metal Used in Cars

Kobe Steel Falsified Quality Data for Metal Used in Cars”

On October 8, 2017, Kobe Steel acknowledged falsifying data about the quality of its aluminum, copper and steel it sold to customers.

Kawasaki, for his part, said he wanted to regain the public's trust and said that trust in Kobe Steel "had fallen to zero".

The Japanese metals company is embroiled in a massive scandal where it's accused of manipulating inspection data on steel, aluminum, and other metals. Honda, Ford and Suzuki are also reported to be among Kobe Steel's customers. Another case involved 6,611 items of sputtering target materials shipped to 70 customers beginning in November 2011.

Kobe Steel Ltd said on Friday it had falsified data on some of its steel wire products on top of the already-announced data fabrication for aluminum, iron powder products and metal materials used in optical discs.

"This incident of improper conduct came to light following self-inspections and emergency quality audits of the compliance status of contracts executed as to products shipped over the past year", Kobe Steel said in a news release.

The U.S. airline maker is carrying out a survey of aircraft to ascertain the extent and type of Kobe Steel components in its planes and will share the results with airline customers, said the source who has knowledge of the investigation.

Toyota, Nissan, Subaru, and Mazda have all confirmed that they are customers of the metal producer and are now working to find out which vehicles are affected. "As hoods are related to pedestrian safety, we are working to quickly assess any potential impact on vehicle functionality".

Subaru has also confirmed that it bought affected products.

"Putting the utmost priority on the safety of our customers, we are rapidly working to identify which vehicle models might be subject to this situation and what components were used, as well as what effect there might be on individual vehicles", Toyota said in a statement.

"At the same time, we are considering what measures need to be put in place going forward to address this matter".

Aircraft maker Boeing said it, too, is looking into the problem but had no reason to believe it was a safety concern.

It is the latest in a string of quality control and governance scandals to hit major Japanese businesses in recent years, undermining the country's reputation for quality.
