Uber files appeal against Transport for London

Uber on Friday filed its appeal against a decision by London authorities not to renew its licence, the USA ride-hailing company said.

Transport for London (TfL) refused to renew the firm's licence last month on the grounds of "public safety and security implications".

The US-based company submitted its appeal with Westminster magistrates court, setting in motion an appeal process during which it will continue to operate in the United Kingdom capital.

Uber, which can continue to operate during its appeal, was banned by Transport for London on September 22 over safety concerns and the company's attempts to avoid regulation.

"As our new CEO (Dara Khosrowshahi) has said, we are determined to make things right".

The talks were described by both sides as "constructive".

TfL has highlighted the company's approach to reporting serious criminal offences and to obtaining criminal record checks for drivers as factors in its decision.

The app enables users to book cars using their smartphones and is available in more than 40 towns and cities across the UK.

Uber has been used by 3.5 million Londoners, developing a loyal fan base by offering convenience and lower prices than traditional "Black Cabs".

Mr Khosrowshahi, the former head of Expedia who replaced Uber's divisive founder Travis Kalanick over the summer, subsequently met representatives from TfL to discuss the latter's concerns and Uber has reportedly hired top QC Thomas de la Mare. Uber's London general manager Tom Elvidge released a statement shortly after saying he was shocked by the decision and would "immediately challenge this in the courts".

An online petition to "save" Uber has garnered over 850,000 signatures.
