Yellowstone Supervolcano Could Blow Quicker Than Thought?

Yellowstone Supervolcano Could Blow Quicker Than Thought?”

After analyzing minerals in fossilized ash from the most recent mega-eruption, researchers at Arizona State University think the supervolcano last woke up after two influxes of fresh magma flowed into the reservoir below the caldera.

The Yellowstone supervolcano under America could erupt with terrifying power - expelling up to 250 cubic miles of volcanic rock and ash at once.

Kari Cooper, a geochemist at the University of California, Davis, who was not involved in the research, told the Times that while the research gives more insights into the time frames of supervolcanic eruptions, she is not convinced that they can target a precise trigger of the last Yellowstone event.

A supervolcano beneath the ground at Yellowstone National Park that last blew more than 630,000 years ago could again erupt sooner than thought and destroy all life on the planet, according to a new study centered around ancient ash. According to researchers, the super eruption use to scar the planet in every 100000 years. Until now, geologists believed it would take centuries for the supervolcano to make that transition.

The Arizona State study follows research in 2013 that showed the magma reservoir that feeds the supervolcano beneath Yellowstone National Park may be about 2½ times bigger than originally believed.

"It's an extraordinary uplift, because it covers such a large area and the rates are so high", the University of Utah's Bob Smith, an expert in Yellowstone volcanism, told National Geographic six years ago.

According to The Times, Shamloo later analyzed crystals from the team's dig that recorded changes in temperature, pressure and water content beneath the volcano - much like a set of tree rings.

'We expected that there might be processes happening over thousands of years preceding the eruption, ' said Christy Tillat Arizona State, in an interview with the New York Times. Instead, the outer rims of the crystals revealed a clear uptick in temperature and a change in composition that occurred on a rapid time scale. It's also news because, as the Times notes, decades are but "a blink of an eye, geologically speaking". The information suggests an eruption is possible in just a matter of decades.
