Supreme Court refuses Diwali relief to traders

Supreme Court refuses Diwali relief to traders”

As the festival of lights Diwali inches closer, the "Ok Jaanu" star has taken to social media to appeal to her fans to not burst fire crackers not just because it harms the environment, in the form of air and noise pollution, but also because it affects animals. The apex court dismissed the plea of firecracker traders who had sought relaxation in the October 9 ban order and sought permission to sell crackers for at least a day or two before Diwali on October 19.

The district administration is going to constitute a team with its officials, besides officials from police, the GMC and the Pollution Control Board, Assam (PCBA) to check and inspect commercial stockiest of fire-crackers to stop the use of such crackers at source. "The festival has been celebrated for hundreds of years..." "There are children who wait for Diwali celebrations", he said. "The court may be pleased to restrict the time for bursting and restrict the time for sale", Rohtagi submitted. Delhi is not an exception to India...

“Schools have been advised to sensitise children and staff about the harmful effects of firecrackers so that they use safer alternatives like lights and flowers to celebrate the festival. It, however, allowed the Trust to implead in the petition.

A bench of Justices A.K. Sikri and Ashok Bhushan observed, "We are pained that some people are giving (it) communal colour". "I'm so spiritual in all these matters", he said, adding that the public reaction was "anguish expressed against our order, which they are entitled to".

"We are not going to modify (the ban on sales) as that will go against the spirit of our order".

During the hearing, senior advocate Prashant Bhushan, appearing for one of the parties, referred to certain statements made by some political leaders after the court's 9 October verdict.

Stating that there was direct evidence of deterioration of air quality at alarming levels, which happens every year during Diwali, the bench said the November 11, 2016, order suspending the licences "should be given one chance to test itself in order to find out as to whether there would be positive effect of this suspension, particularly during Diwali period". It said the suspension will remain in force till November 1, as this was meant to test whether air quality will improve on account of it.
