Coggins was found dead from traumatic injuries on October 9, 1983 in a grassy area in the small town of Sunny Side, south of Atlanta.

Also facing charges are Sandra Bunn and her 32-year-old son, Lamar Bunn, as well as Gregory Huffman, 47.

Lamar Bunn worked for the Milner Police Department. 'It was a torturous death'. The Spaulding County Sheriff's Office stated in a press release that the victim died as a result of multiple forms of trauma.

Sheriff Darrell Dix said: "We have been in contact with a representative from Coggins" family and they have been briefed on where we are at in the investigation.

'It does not matter who he was, or where he was from, this man died a frightful death and those responsible for his murder need to be held accountable. Dix added that had the killing would have been prosecuted as a hate crime had it occurred today. They had been dedicated to intimidate and threaten potential witnesses in an attempt to remain untouched, Dix confirmed.

'Thirty four years have passed since this awful crime was committed and those who killed him have believed that they would remain untouched until literally just a few days ago.

"Thanks to the assistance of both local and statewide new media coverage, previously unknown witnesses stepped forward and when interviewed, numerous witnesses stated that they had been living with this information since Coggins' death but had been afraid to come forward until now or had not spoken of it until now", Dix said.

Dix offered condolences to Coggins' family and added the pursuit of the case should act as a warning to criminals in the county.
