Harvey Weinstein Was Just Expelled from the Academy”

Weinstein was sacked by the board of the Weinstein Co. This comes as a direct result to the countless sexual misconduct, harassment, and abuse allegations that have been brought against the mogul film producer in the past week.

Harvey Weinstein - who more than anyone defined and shaped the sharp-elbowed art of Oscar campaigning - has been expelled from the group that presents the Academy Awards. Outing Weinstein certainly points to the end of an era within Hollywood and its various machinations. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has suspended Weinstein, and the Producers Guild of America is considering doing the same.

The Academy's bylaws state that, with a two-thirds vote, the board of governors can eject a member "for cause".

In Weinstein's case, the decision was all the more dramatic given how assiduously he had courted the Academy's approval over the years. Some of the higher-profile members include Whoopi Goldberg, Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks.

He denied the rape allegations in a statement to The New Yorker issued by one of his representatives. Weinstein himself was personally called up to the stage in 1999 as a producer of Shakespeare in Love when it was named best picture. On Wednesday, the academy issued a statement describing the allegations against Weinstein as "repugnant, abhorrent, and antithetical to the high standards of the academy and the creative community it represents".

Weinstein was ousted from his position at The Weinstein Company on Sunday in the wake of the New York Times report.

The vote regarding Weinstein could have implications for the academy in the future, since it will nearly surely be used as a benchmark when other situations involving members arise. Weinstein said in a statement on Wednesday that he was going to counseling.

Bob told The Hollywood Reporter he had been aware his brother was unfaithful to Chapman but did not know "the type of predator that he was".
