National Hate Crime Awareness Week 2017 begins today

National Hate Crime Awareness Week 2017 begins today”

A JOINT campaign against hate crime is being relaunched to mark National Hate Crime Awareness Week.

There are a number of initiatives happening this week across the District involving numerous groups and organisations who support victims of hate crime aimed at raising awareness of the issues and encouraging reporting.

"We as partnerships across North Worcestershire, in co-ordination with the National Hate Crime Awareness Week, are setting out a stall and it includes a small theatrical display, to help residents see the seriousness of hate crime and to see how it affects others and those around us and in the community".

"No-one should be subjected to, or fear, abuse due to their disability, race, religion, sexual orientation or gender identity", said Mr Burns-Williamson.

PCC Barry Coppinger said: "We are committed to treating every report of a hate incident seriously".

We struggle to communicate with some of the communities often affected by hate crime. "By working together we can drive prejudice out of our communities and out of Scotland".

The campaign consists of dedicated web pages, social media promotion, posters, and new videos.

Chief Superintendent John McKenzie said: "People of all races, religions, ethnicities, of any sexual orientation or with any disability should be able to live their lives free from hate or harassment".

"Ensuring we all take a stand and report hate crime is an important part of creating a fairer country for all".

"Show Racism the Red Card will also be offering training to our officers under this banner next month to heighten awareness of Hate Crime issues".

Hate Crime Awareness Week looks to give people a better understanding of what hate crime is and how it can be reported.

Reports to the police can be made by calling 999 in an emergency, calling 101 for a non-emergency, online at westyorkshire.police.uk/advice/abuse-anti-social-behaviour/hate-crime/hate-crime-hate-incidents or report-it.org.uk or by calling in to a police station.
