North Korea says Donald Trump has 'lit the wick of war'”

US President Donald Trump has "lit the wick of war" with North Korea and his country will be made to pay with "a hail of fire", a Russian news agency quoted North Korea's foreign minister as saying on Wednesday (Oct 11).

Mr Trump denied NBC's report, labelling it "fake news".

Instead, he called for the "modernisation and total rehabilitation" of the United States nuclear arsenal.

"We need to settle the final score, only with a hail of fire, not words". I want it in flawless shape. But I want modernization and I want total rehabilitation. "It's got to be in tip-top shape".

In a separate statement, Defense Secretary James Mattis said, "Recent reports that the president called for an increase in the USA nuclear arsenal are absolutely false".

According to the Federation of American Scientists, the United States now has around 4,000 nuclear warheads in its military stockpile. "This kind of erroneous reporting is irresponsible", Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said.

"Right now, we have so many nuclear weapons", he added.

His peculiar mind-set was on full display during a meeting with the country's top-ranking national security officials this summer, when Trump reportedly advocated for what would be the equivalent of a tenfold increase in the USA nuclear stockpile.

Trump's recent tweets on North Korea have prompted questions about whether the president is leaning toward military action.

During the campaign and into his presidency, Donald Trump has displayed an alarming lack of knowledge around the topic of nuclear weapons.

But modernising the arsenal would not put the United States in violation of treaty obligations, nuclear expert Joe Cirincione told NBC News.
